With the release of iOS 12.4 and watchOS 5.3 during yesterday we also received the patch that solves the vulnerability that made the Walkie Talkie functionality of the Apple Watch dangerous because in certain circumstances someone with bad intentions could hear what they are told two interlocutors through an alien iPhone. Apple chose to deactivate it to avoid greater evils while working on a solution. Virtually no one noticed.
Now that the functionality of Walkie Talkie is working again, once again almost nobody cares, because basically very few people use it outside the US.
The reason is simple; when someone wants to send an audio recording to another person, in the vast majority of times they use the audio recording feature of Instant Messaging Apps like WhatsApp, or any other. This is because they are very widespread Apps that absolutely everyone has installed. They are agnostic in terms of platform … that is, one sends a voice recording and knows that the other side will listen without problems regardless of whether you have an iPhone or an Android smartphone. This is a huge advantage, the same one that the Messages App faces in order to be popular. Apple has simply been late for this party years ago.
It is true that sending an audio recording from one Apple Watch to another can be comfortable, and also very fun, reminding us of characters like Dick Tracy.
However, and despite the fact that Apple Watch has sold a lot, this way of sending messages does not allow someone to send audio and be sure that they will listen to it. Users must be authorized in advance and know that the other side has an Apple Watch as well. For that reason, one knows that it will never be as popular as simply using WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Telegram, LINE and company.
Even so, if you are one of the few users who use the Apple Watch Walkie Talkie feature, you will be happy to know that it is working again. To achieve this you just have to update your iPhone and your partner’s to iOS 12.4.
